Ogun Govt celebrates World Forestry Day

The Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya has commended Ministry of Forestry for encouraging pubic servants to cultivate the habit of planting trees.

He gave the commendation while performing symbolic planting of trees at this year’s World Forestry Day celebration at the open field opposite House of Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan Abeokuta.

The head of service noted that sustainability of tree planting will make the environment green and ward off avoidable ailments.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Forestry, Engr. Taiwo Oludotun explained that the day is to create awareness on the importance of planting trees.

Oludotun said in accordance with this year’s theme “Forest and Food” planting trees is to purify the air, give shelter, serve as raw materials for industries and provide food for all and sundry.

” Ogun State is the industrial capital of Nigeria and the rate of emission can not be compared to other states, planting of trees is to purify the air, it gives shelter, provides food and serve as raw materials for industries” He said.

In his remark, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Adekunle Oyesawen revealed that the ministry has engaged private partners and stakeholders in planting of trees to sustain the environment.

Also speaking, the Project Manager Ogun State Forestry Project Area J4, Mr. Olukayode Sonibare, said forest professionals are doing everything possible to ensure the forest reserves are protected from exploitation.

In his goodwill message the Chairman Forestry Association of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter, Otunba Jide Fakayode said the significance of the day is to enlighten the public that you don’t just exploit but as you are exploiting you are also replacing and replanning.
