Tinubu’s National Security Emergency: Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar resigns
Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health-related concerns, as President Tinubu announced his National Security Emergency.
His resignation was formally conveyed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a letter dated December 1, 2025, according to an e-signed statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.the Presidency, Mr Bayo Onanuga.
President Tinubu has accepted the minister’s resignation and expressed appreciation for Badaru’s service to the nation.
The President is expected to notify the Senate of a new ministerial nominee to replace Badaru later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, aged 63, previously served two terms as Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023.
He joined President Tinubu’s cabinet as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023, playing a key role in various national security initiatives.
His departure comes at a sensitive moment, following President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, with further details of the government’s security strategy expected soon.
